Search the Mayors and Sheriffs of London Database
Searching the Database
The database includes the names of mayors, sheriffs, and wardens, their years of office, and their company memberships or (in the earliest years) occupations (where known), with all information sources provided either generally, via the site menu bar, or individually in explanatory notes. Search options include:
- searching by name (surname only, or first name followed by surname)
- searching by year of office
- searching by range of years
- searching by office
- searching by company/occupation
- searching by a combination of the above terms
In the search results window you can click on Name or Year to change the sort order.
For the widest range of responses to a name search, search by surname only. If at first unsuccessful, try variant spellings, e.g., Brun for Brown, Broke for Brock, or search a range of years instead. In searches for, e.g., mayors from one specific company during a range of years, search under each company name when dealing with a company that changed its name during the time period in which you are interested. (See the side bar, on every search-results page, on company name changes, or consult Companies/Occupations on the site menu bar.) Consult the site menu bar for information on how to interpret year-of-office dates.
Search results also provide, through explanatory notes, information on matters such as identification problems and source disagreements.
Exclusions
Names are not included of individuals chosen/elected as mayor or sheriff but for one reason or another never sworn into office. Also not included are sheriffs who served for only a few days before being rejected by the king and replaced.
